Botanical Name: Epilobium parviflorium
Small-flowered willow herb, Epilobium parviflorum, is widespread in Central and Eastern Europe and in disturbed areas of North America.
Epilobium parviflorum has been used for a long time as a medicinal plant for the treatment of various prostate symptoms such as enlarged prostate and prostatitis. All willow herb species contain flavorglycosides, especially derivatives of kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin. Epilobium parviflorum also contains b-sitosterol, various esters of sitosterol, and sitosterol glucoside have been detected. These are the compounds considered to be the active ingredients of Saw Palmetto, another major herb used for treating the prostate.
It is also used for kidney or bladder disorders, gastro-intestinal disorders, mouth mucus membrane lesions, rectal bleeding, menstrual disorders, cystitis, even, urinary infections, bronchial infections, diarrhea, mucous colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and can be made into an ointment to soothe skin problems in children.
