Botanical Name: Crataeva nurvala
Varuna or three leaved caper is the drug of choice for all urinary problems which include kidney stones, painful, and/or burning urination.
It is diuretic, rubefacient (reddening the skin) and anti-inflammatory. The bark of varuna is believed to have antioxidant, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and urinary-renal supportive qualities, the root is laxative and the leaves are considered to be stomachic and tonic.
Varuna is a known litholytic herb (ability to break up stones). It is indicated that lupeol, a constituent of varuna, deactivates the enzyme glycolate oxidase which reduces the production of oxalates in the body which in turn combine with calcium to form kidney stones. This mechanism of Varuna makes it a litholytic herb.
Varuna is an important Ayurvedic herb that supports renal conditions. Varuna is used by traditional Ayurvedic herbalists to increase appetite, while stimulating digestion and elimination and also acts as an herbal support for flatulence and abdominal pain.
